Statement
We began the development of LIVE @ White Cart Water with the idea of a figure floating in water being filmed from an overhead angle. Our intention was to create an ambiguous image, depicting both threat and calmness. The beauty of a lone face floating in water, almost like Ophelia, beautifully surrounded by water and plants—simultaneously depicting humanity’s struggle to make a safe home in an ultimately uncontrollable world.
As the work developed, the moment of filming this floating act—the act of filming and reporting on this scene unfolding in public—became the focus of the work. The act of reporting, the disruption, the presence of camera operators, vans of equipment, and producers in high-vis jackets—that spectacle became an aesthetic focus in order to construct a wider narrative around media representation and reporting on local issues, affecting Scotland and Paisley in particular. This will form the body of the film, which will be projected onto the wall of No.1 High Street in Paisley.
