Statement

Frenemy / My Algorithm and Me is a series of workshops, a video essay/documentary and a digital crowdsourced database that chronicles user experiences of social media content algorithms. Employing participatory action research, qualitative interviews, focus groups, and critical/creative methodologies, this work asks the question: what is the impact of these algorithms?

Our research reveals biases within these systems that perpetuate societal inequalities and influence individual self-perceptions. We explore techniques for positive change, for example collective screenshotting and algorithmic role-playing. Through this project, we raise awareness about the necessity of systemic change and provide empirical data to inform policy discussions.
